Welcome!


Two Voices, One Speaker

A few years ago I received a phone call out of the blue from a man in Virginia. Carl had just found the website, done the pointing experiment, and was phoning up to say ‘Thank you!’ Here’s roughly how the conversation went:

“I’ve been searching for my innermost nature for years and today I pointed my finger at where others see my face and found my True Face! My Original Face! How simple! How easy!”

“Wonderful!” I exclaimed. “So you’re looking out of a Single Eye are you?”

“I am! It has no boundary, it’s absolutely clear – no features at all – and right now I find my home in Virginia happening in it!”

“Well, that’s extraordinary!” I said. “I’m looking out of what sounds like exactly the same Single Eye but I find my home here in London happening in it!”

Carl was on the ball: “Yes, it seems there’s just one consciousness. I mean, how could you divide up this space? Yet there are two views happening in it! How does it do it!”

Carl and I were on the same wavelength - I’ve no idea at all how this Single Eye manages to have more than one view happening in it, or any view at all happening in it, for that matter!

“Carl, I can see my phone disappearing into the void where I am. Do you find your phone also disappearing into the void?”

“I do! Our two phones seem to be plugged into the same central consciousness!”

No problem with communication!

I went on:

“I can hear my voice – Richard’s voice – here in this consciousness, in this silence. I can also hear your voice in this silence. Our two voices are obviously different, and naturally I identify with Richard’s and not with yours, for lots of reasons. But from the point of view of being this nameless, silent consciousness, both voices are here in me - both voices are mine!”

“That’s the way it is for me too!” replied Carl. “I can hear both your voice and mine, but they are both here in this one silence. Both are mine. And as I’m listening now, I really don’t know what my voice is going to say before I speak any more than I know what your voice is going to say before you speak. Both your words and my words are emerging unpredictably from this indivisible silence!”

That’s the gist, at least, of our conversation. So inspiring. Our two voices celebrating the One in whom we live and move and have our being…

Since that conversation we have spoken many times on the phone, and I’ve now met Carl – so I now know what he looks like as well being able to recognize his voice! Often when we speak on the phone we talk about the two voices in the one silence – as we listen to the two voices in the one silence… This is meditation, isn’t it, in everyday life. And it’s so intimate. There’s no distance – both voices are right here in your consciousness, and they are both yours. They come out of your own being and dissolve back into it. How wonderful!

How many consciousnesses are there? How many awake nothings can there be? There’s a deep and wonderful mystery here. It seems that the One is also Many.

This is such great news!

Next time you are on the phone, notice where you put the phone. Notice your two voices in your one silence…
