The Source Of Stress
The build-up of stress in the child and the teenager is hardly surprising. Indeed, the astonishing thing is that it isn’t more severe – when one bears in mind the ordeal that he or she is being subjected to. From embracing the world to being shut out of practically all of it, from inspecting the world to being under its inspection, from being the Sun and Centre of the world to being the least of its planetary asteroids, from melting and merging into the things of the world to being up against them, from having the Unlimited for backing to being thrown on your own puny resources, from being richer than Dives to being poorer than the beggar Lazarus at his gate, from being the unshakeable Rock to being a fleck of the foam of the sea that beats on it in vain – can you imagine a more testing and many-sided ordeal, tougher initiation rites into membership of this Clan called Humanity, this Tribe of tribes?
